COURSE GLOSSARY

acknowledge: say or do something to show another person his communication has been heard and understood.

agony: extreme pain.

antibiotics: substances that are able to kill or inactivate bacteria in the body. Antibiotics come from microorganisms (very small living organisms) or are produced artificially by a chemical process.

butcher knife: a large, very sharp knife for cutting meat.

diagnosis: a decision about what a disease or other condition is, made after observing its signs and symptoms.

discomfort: an uncomfortable or unpleasant physical or mental feeling.

index finger: the finger next to the thumb.

livingness: the quality, condition or state of being alive.

objective: the goal that someone is trying to achieve.

shin: the front part of the leg between the knee and the ankle.

sober: not drunk.

sprain: an injury to the area around a joint (a body part that bends) involving pain and swelling, caused by pulling or twisting the joint with a lot of force, without breaking a bone or moving the bones out of position.

surge: a sudden, sharp increase in something flowing through something else.

X-ray: a picture of the inside of someone’s body. X-rays are invisible waves consisting of tiny particles of energy that are able to go through soft materials in the same way that light passes through glass. They are commonly used by hospitals, doctors and dentists to show pictures of the inside of the body.
